Josh Johnson outpitched Johan Santana as the Marlins defeated the Mets 2-1 on Sunday.

Johan Santana allowed three hits and struck out 13 and gave up no earned runs in seven innings yet still absorbed the loss in the Marlins 2-1 victory over the Mets. His mound opponent Josh Johnson 2-0 pitched even better throwing a complete game victory. Johnson has allowed one run in 15 2/3 innings this season while striking out 15 and walking one batter. Johnson ended the game with a 0.57 ERA while Santana has a 0.71 ERA this season.

Cody Ransom Not A Threat To A-Rod

Cody Ransom has made the Yankees appreciate Alex Rodriguez even more after having only one hit in twenty trips to the plate this season. He currently is hitting .050. If the Yankees knew he was going to hit .050 they may have signed or traded for a veteran to fill in at third base. Now it is too late for that since Rodriguez should return in the next couple of weeks.

Pirates Turn Triple Play

The Pirates may have lost their game to the Reds yesterday 2-0 but what most baseball fans will remember is the triple play the Pirates turned in the eighth inning. The triple play overshadowed a great pitching performance by Aaron Harang 1-1 who allowed only three hits in his complete game victory and lowered his ERA to 0.64.

Baseball Roundup

The 2009 baseball season is only a week old but there have been some surprises. The Mariners and Padres have both won four in a row and are on top of the AL West and NL West respectively. The Cardinals also have a four game winning streak and lead the second place Cubs by half a game in the NL Central….Meanwhile the Nationals lost their sixth straight game this season and have gone winless since opening day….The White Sox defeated the Twins for the second day in a row behind a sterling performance on the mound by Mark Buehrle 1-1 who allowed only one run and two hits in 6 1/3 innings in the 6-1 win. The White Sox have outscored the Twins 14-1 over the last two games….The Rangers bullpen wasted a Kevin Millwood outing that saw him pitch seven scoreless innings and allowing four hits. C.J. Wilson entered the game and allowed the Tigers to come back from a 4-0 deficit as the Tigers went ahead 6-4 when he gave up six runs and four hits in 1/3 of an inning. The game ended with the Tigers winning 6-4.

An MLB article written at 1:19 AM said the callup of Adam Eaton solidified the Orioles starting rotation and that Eaton had been working out with the team but hadn’t been allowed in the dugout. Rather than solidify the rotation he unsolidified the rotation. After yesterday’s performance they wish they had kept him out of the dugout one day longer as he took the loss in the Rays 11-3 win over the Orioles. Eaton gave up 4 runs and eight hits in four innings to take the loss but Brian Bass did worse after Eaton had contaminated the mound. Bass gave up seven runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Erik Bedard 1-0 pitched 8 1/3 innings of scoreless three hit baseball as the Mariners defeated the A’s 1-0. Trevor Cahill took the loss despite giving up only one run and two hits in seven innings….Kyle Lohse pitched a complete game shutout for the Cardinals defeating the reeling Astros 3-0. Lohse allowed only three hits and lowered his ERA to 1.13….The Phillies overcame a 5-1 deficit to defeat the Rockies 7-5….Randy Wolf pitched the Dodgers to a 3-1 win over the Diamondback as he allowed only one run and two hits in seven innings.

Alfonso Soriano is tied for second in homers in the majors after hitting his fourth homer of season. He also was one of three Cubs to steal a base with Jason Kendall behind the plate for the Brewers. Derrek Lee and Milton Bradley are a combined 3 for 42 this season with Bradley having one hit in seventeen trips to the plate. Meanwhile Micah Hoffpauir who is 1 for 3 languishes on the bench while the players he backs up have only three hits between them. The Cubs still won the game 8-5 despite Kevin Gregg allowing a run for the third time in four relief appearances. Kosuke Fukudome leads the Cubs in slugging with a .818 percentage. The question about Fukudome is if he can hit all season in 2009 unlike when he started off well in 2008 but his batting average declined in each month the rest of the season.
