Tim Lincecum: Cy Young Winner?

Tim Lincecum is still in the running for the 2009 Cy Young Award despite having only 14 wins since he is leading the NL in ERA and strikeouts.

When looking at the 14-9 record of Tim Lincecum it is easy to think he doesn’t have a chance for the NL Cy Young Award.

However despite having four wins less than 18 game winner Adam Wainwright he still has the best overall numbers in the National League.

His return yesterday after being sidelined for ten days was a huge pickup for the Giants. He pitched seven innings while limiting the Rockies to one run in the 9-1 Giants win. He also struck out 11 batters in the contest.

He currently leads the NL in strikeouts with 244 with Javier Vazquez next with 214. He also leads the NL in ERA with a 2.30 mark with Chris Carpenter second with an ERA of 2.45.

Lincecum has only 14 wins but only Adam Wainwright with 18, Chris Carpenter with 16 and Jason Marquis with 15 have posted more wins this season.

Last season Brandon Webb won 22 games while Lincecum won 18 yet still didn’t win the Cy Young Award.

It won’t be a surprise if Lincecum wins again despite less wins because his overall numbers are so overwhelming.

Lincecum also leads in strikeouts per nine innings with 10.59 strikeouts per nine innings. He is third in WHIP with a 1.04 mark while Wainwright is 14th with a 1.21 WHIP.

Carpenter could still be a factor in the Cy Young voting but I think Lincecum has the best chance knowing he won last year despite four less wins than Webb.

Diamond Notes

The Twins suffered a huge loss with the news that Justin Morneau has played his last game this season after an MRI revealed a stress fracture in his back. The Cardinals and Cubs both won yesterday as the Cardinals magic number to eliminate the Cubs is now 10. The Cubs have won eight of their last 12 games but still are nine and-a-half games back of the Cardinals with with 20 games remaining.

Shin Soo “Chattanooga” Choo Choo may be leaving the Indians sometime in the next couple of years to fulfill his service obligation in South Korea. The South Korean government requires two years of service by South Korean men. He leads the Indians with 78 runs batted in.

Who would have thought that Adam Lind would drive in 100 runs this season and that Aaron Hill would only need two more runs batted in for 100 this season? Meanwhile highly paid Vernon Wells has drove in only 60 runs.

Ryan Braun, Adam Dunn and Hanley Ramirez need one RBI to have 100 RBI’s this season….Mark Reynolds is six strikeouts short of having 200 strikeouts. Adam Wainwright needs two wins to have 20 wins in 2009 while C.C. Sabathia will have to win all three of his remaining starts to win 20 games.

Albert Pujols with 86 extra base hits is 14 short of 100 which would make him the first NL player with 100 since 2001 when Barry Bonds accomplished the feat….Adam Lind and Mark Teixeira share the AL lead with 75 each.
