Utley, Lee Spark Phillies To 6-1 Win Over Yankees
Chase Utley hit two solo homers to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead over the Yankees after seven innings while Cliff Lee allowed no earned run in his 6-1 complete game win over the Yankees.
Lee outpitched C.C. Sabathia but it was still a close game after seven innings. Then Sabathia was removed after seven innings because he had made 113 pitches.
Yankees Bullpen Implodes
The Yankees bullpen imploded once Sabathia left the game allowing two runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Yankees scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the ninth when Derek Jeter scored on an errant throw to first base by Jimmy Rollins.
Lee Shuts Down Teixeira And Rodriguez
Lee struck out 10 while not issuing a walk and shut down the middle of the Yankees batting order. Alex Rodriguez struck out three times and Mark Teixeira struck out twice. Rodriguez had struck out only five times in the previous nine postseason games.
Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon at the top of the order for the Yankees were 4 for 8. The next seven batters combined for a 2-24 night.
Teixeira is hitting a disappointing .188 for the Yankees during the postseason.
Lee 3-0, 0.54 ERA In Postseason
Lee has been amazing for the Phillies in the postseason. He is 3-0 with a 0.54 ERA. He has struck out 30 and walked three in 33 innings for an excellent strikeouts to walks ratio. He hasn’t allowed a home run and has given up two earned runs in those 33 innings.
It is ironic that the first two starters in the World Series for the Phillies didn’t join the team till after the All Star break.
It wasn’t surprising that the Yankees lost with Lee on the mound but it was surprising they lost by a 6-1 score in front of their home crowd.
Yankees Have History Of Winning Big Games
The Yankees have a history of winning when they have to but if they don’t win tonight and head to Philadelphia needing to win four of their next five games their chances of winning the 2009 World Series will be very slim.
After the first game the Phillies are outhitting the Yankees .265 to .188 and outslugging them .529 to .219.

Starting Pitchers: A.J. Burnett 0-0, 4.42 ERA has started three games without a decision in the postseason. He has allowed nine runs and 14 hits in 18 innings while striking out 13 and walking 10 and hitting four batters.
His lack of control could be a serious problem if it continues against the Phillies because the Phillies have scored 61 runs in ten postseason games.
Pedro Martinez 0-0, 0.00 ERA has started only one game but pitched well in that game pitching seven scoreless innings while striking out three and walking none.
Martinez has a 6-3 record with a 3.13 ERA in 86 innings of postseason pitching while Burnett is in his first postseason.
