Jorge Cantu of the Marlins extended his new major league record of games with at least one hit and one RBI to start the season to ten yesterday breaking the 89 year old record of George "Highpockets" Kelly.

Jorge Cantu extended his record for games with at least one hit and one RBI in each game to start a season to ten games in a 10-2 victory over the Reds last night.

Cantu also moved into a tie with Albert Pujols for the major league RBI lead with his 15th run batted in of the season. He is hitting .308 and slugging .692 for the season.

Looking at Stats

Hitting

Placido Polanco, Martin Prado and Scott Podsednik lead the majors in hits with 19, 17 and 16 respectively.

Nelson Cruz leads the majors in home runs with six. Cruz also leads the majors in slugging with a 1.063 percentage and in OPS with a 1.510 mark. He also is the major league leader in total bases with 34.

David Wright leads all players in walks with 13 while Alexei Ramirez leads the majors in strikeouts with 14. …Scott Podsednik continues to lead the majors in stolen bases with six.

Russell Martin leads in on base percentage with a .545 mark….Placido Polanco leads in batting average with a .475 average….Alex Gonzalez is the leader in extra base hits with 10 and has hit four homers in 43 at bats while hitting only eight homers in 391 at bats in 2009.

Pitching

Casey Janssen of the Blue Jays leads the majors in wins with a 3-0 record….Seventeen pitchers are tied with 0-2 marks for most losses without a win. Those names include Javier Vazquez, Jason Marquis, Yovani Gallardo, Jon Garland and Roy Oswalt.

Brett Anderson of the Athletics and J.A. Happ of the Phillies lead the majors with a 0.00 ERA….Dan Haren and Josh Johnson lead in strikeouts with 20….Jon Rauch leads in saves with five.

Carlos Zambrano is the major league walks allowed leader with 20 in 13 innings….Zambrano is tied with Charlie Morton of the Pirates and Aaron Harang for most earned runs allowed with 14.

Chris Carpenter and Aaron Harang have allowed the most homers this season with each pitcher allowing five long balls….Clay Kershaw is the walks leader allowing 11 free passes.

Jake Westbrook has the dubious distinction of leading in two categories that are an indication of failure by hitting four batters and throwing four wild pitches in nine innings of pitching.

Looking at the Standings

The Rays have the longest winning streak in the majors at three….The Orioles have the longest losing streak with the 1-9 Orioles having a current seven game losing streak.

The Orioles and Astros have the worst home records with 0-6 marks….The surprising Athletics have the best home record with a 4-1 record.

The division leaders as of today in the AL are the Blue Jays in the AL East, Twins in AL Central and the Athletics in AL West…. The NL division leading teams are the Phillies in NL East, Cardinals in NL Central and the Diamondbacks in the NL West.

Surprisingly Good Teams

Toronto Blue Jays finished fourth in AL East last season and are leading the division currently….The Athletics finished last in the AL West and are the current AL West leader.

No NL team has been surprisingly good this season.

Surprisingly Bad Teams

The Angels who won the AL West in 2009 are the second worst team in the AL this season and in last place in the AL West. The Orioles are the worst team but that is no surprise.

The Astros who are missing Lance Berkman due to injury have been off to a horrific 1-8 start. They are already five games behind the the NL Central leading Cardinals.

  1. To break a record that has stood for 89 years is big. Much like when Ichiro Suzuki broke Sisler’s season hit mark, big. I think there is one record that will never be broken, DiMaggio’s 56 game hitting streak. No one has even come close to that.

  2. Pete Rose gave Dimaggio’s record a shot but that still wasn’t good enough to get him in Hall of Fame thanks to Selig sticking his head in the sand and passing it on to the next commissioner.

Ichiro has been outstanding and hope he gets 200 hits again this season.
